Description of the photo
This is a beautiful sculpture of Lord Siva. Siras is in Nihancita, Griva is in Sama, Urah is in Sama, the Parsva is very slightly bent, Kati is in Udvahita on left, the left leg is straight, Janu and Pada is slightly bent on its side, the right leg is crossed in front in Svastika and the right Pada is in Kuncita. Seems be performing the Mattalli Cari. One left hand is in Ardhacandra and the other left hand is holding the Parasu, one right hand is in Varada Hasta and the other right hand is holding a deer. Nandi the bull is visible behind Siva. Such an image of Siva is called Risabharudar.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
