Figure 14. A dancing girl in Ayata Sthana

Image title: Figure 14. A dancing girl in Ayata Sthana

Description of the photo

In this figure the girl is standing with a beautiful parrot in her left hand in Ayata Sthana.Right Uru, Janu Jangha and Pada are in Sama with toes facing the front. Right side Kati is raised–Udhavahita. Right hand is in Uru Hasta in Ardhacandra. Right leg is straight and unbent , left hand is holding a parrot–Hasta not clear. No exact identification of any Cari or Karana possible. Seems more like a posture. “Sthanas are postures of the entire leg. The Sthanas are positions from which Caris are to be executed. The Karanas are performed in specific Sthanas.”

As we can conclude from the personal interviews of the temple staff, Devadasis were very much attached to this temple and it is very common to see these dancing girls to be captured in form of sculptures in these temples. This brings out the close association of the Devadasis with the temples.
