Description of the photo

It is a sculpture of a dancing girl striking a beautiful Abhanga posture. Her Siras is in Sama, Urah [uras] is in Sama, Parsva is in Samunnata on right and Nata on the left, Kati is in Udvahita on right side. She is standing in Ayata Sthana, her right leg is straight and unbent on right, right Uru is in Stambhana, right Janu is in Sama, right Jangha is unbent and right Pada is in Sama. Left leg is at ease. Left Pada is Sama.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
