Description of the photo

This is a sculpture of a dancing girl standing on a Yali. Her right leg is in front Svastika. Right Jangha is in Avartita, right Pada is in Agratala. Left leg is straight and unbent, left Uru is in Stambhana, left Janu is in Sama, left Jangha is unbent, left Pada is in Sama. Her Siras is in Ancita, Urah [uras] is in Sama, Parsva is in Samunnata on right and Nata on left, Kati is raised on left side. Her right hand is holding a Padma and her left hand is in Uru Hasta. Next to her on her left is a small sculpture of Vennai Krsna. His right hand is holding butter and his left hand is in Recita. His right leg is raised in Urdhvajanu.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
