Description of the photo
The main sculpture on this pillar is if a dancing girl holding a parrot. Her Siras is in Ancita, her Parsva is in Nata on left and Samunnata on right, Urah [uras] is in Sama, Kati is in Unnata on the left side. Right hand is folded on the shoulder to hold a parrot and the left hand is in Uru. The left leg is straight and unbent, left Uru is in Stambhana, left Janu is in Sama, left Pada is in Sama. Right leg is crossed in the front to form a Svastika. Right Jangha is in Avartita and right Pada is in Agratala. She is standing on a Yali.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
