On top of the pillar is a sculpture of Cakrapani who has 16 hands. Lord Visnu appears in the form of a discus to put down the pride of Surya.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning).
