Description of the photo

This is the sculpture of Kodanda Rama who is seated in Sukhasana with left leg folded and the right leg left down. His Siras, Parsva, Urah [uras] and Kati are in Sama or unbent or raised.His right hand is holding a Bana and his left hand is holding the bow Kodanda.

The main sculpture on this pillar is a horse rider. He is controlling the horse with his left hand and is carrying a sword with his right. To his left we can see the sculpture of Rajagopala with his wife Satyabhama on his left. Rajagopala is holding a stick with a whip attached. Satyabhama is holding a Padma in her right and has kept her left hand on Uru.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
