Description of the photo

This is a sculpture of Rajagopala. We can see him holding the stick with whip in his right hand and his left hand is restng on a cow. To his right is Rukmini whose left hand is holding a Padma and her right hand is in Lata. To his left is Satyabhama whose right hand is holding the Padma and her left is in Lata. Rukmini and Rajagopala are in Ayata Sthana whereas Satyabhama is in Avahittha Sthana. They are all exhibiting Abhanga. There is one bend at the waist where as the body from waist above and waist below is straight. In Rajagopala and Rukmini the waist is in Udvahita on the right side where as in Satyabhama the waist is in Udvahita on the left.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
