Description of the photo
This is a beautiful sculpture of Venugopala. His posture is Tribhanga -bent at the waist, neck and knee. His Siras is in Ancita, his Parsva is in Nata on right and Samunnata on left. Urah [uras] is in Sama, Kati is in Udvahita on the left. His right leg is straight and unbent-left Uru is in Stambhana, left Janu is in Sama, left Pada is in Sama. Right leg is crossed in front Svastika, right Janu is is in slight Unnata, right Jangha is in Avartita, right Pada is in Agratala. His face is exquisitely carved.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
