Description of the photo

The King who built the temple i.e. Accuta Nayaka is shown. He is riding a horse and is carrying a weapon in his hand. Below this sculpture is the figure of a soldier who is defeating a Yali. On the left side one can also see a small sculpture of a lady holding a Camaram [Camara]. She seems to be performing the Baddha Cari using the Chinna movement of her Kati. Her left hand is placed on the Uru in Ardhacandra. The right leg is turned inward. The right Uru is in Valana, right Janu is in slight Unnata, right Jangha is in Nata, right Pada is in Agratala. Left leg is straight and unbent. Left Uru is in Stambhana, left Janu is in Sama, left Jangha is unbent, left Pada is in Sama. There is a parrot seated on her left shoulder. Her right Kati is in Udvahita.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
