This figure is in Pratyalidha Sthana with the hands is Svastika in front of the chest. Siras is in Ancita, Urah [uras] is in Sama, Parsva also seems to be in Sama, Kati is in slight Udvahita on the left side. Right Pada is in Sama, right Jangha is unbent, right Janu is in Sama, right Uru is in Stambhana. Left Pada is in Sama, left Jangha is in Nata, left Janu is in Ardhakuncita.

This fits into the description of Vyamsita Karana no.48 according to whose description, “After assuming Alidha Sthana the two hands perform Recita held on the chest and afterwards moved up and down with Viprakirna of the hands.” Then the same thing is repeated on the left side. Here the figure is showing Pratyalidha Sthana and Svastika of hands before doing Viprakirna to continue Recita.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
