Description of the photo

In the above figure the maiden is holding a branch of a tree with her left hand.

Her Siras is in Ancita. Her Parsva is in Nata on left and Samunnata on right, Urah [uras] is in Sama, Kati is raised in Udvahita on left side, her right Uru is in Stambhana, right Janu is in Sama and Jangha does not show any movement. Right Pada is in Sama. Left Uru is in Valana left Jangha is in Parivrtta. The left Pada is placed on the branch. Right hand is in Uru Hasta and the left hand is raised holding the branch.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
