Description of the photo

The left Pada is in Sama. Left Uru is in Stambha, left Janu is in Sama, left Jangha is straight and no movement. The right Pada is in Agratala, right Uru is in Valana, right Jangha is in Nata. Left Kati is in Udvahita performing Chinna movement (as if turning around). This sculpture is exhibiting a movement. Her Urah [uras] is in Sama, Parsva is in Nata on right and Samunnata on left. Siras is in Avadhuta (lowered towards right). Left hand is in Uru and right hand is raised and seems to be holding a mirror. She seems to be doing the Baddha Cari.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
