Portion of a Yupa Pillar—A Stone Pillar placed upright in the centre of the Yupa Chamber. The part hidden in the dome is square while the upper open section is octagaonal. This too, is an ancient part of the Stupa.

In Sanskrit this would be known as Yūpasthambha (यूपस्थम्भ, yupa-stambha).

යූපස්ථම්භයේ කොටසක්—ස්තූප ගර්භ මධ්‍යයෙහි සිටුවන ලද ශිලා ස්ථම්භයයි. ස්තූප ගර්භයට යටවන කොටස හතරැස් හැඩයෙන් ද ගර්භයෙන් ඉහළ කොටස අටපට්ටම් හැඩයෙන් ද යුක්ත වේ. මෙය මුල් ස්තූප ආකෘතියට අයත්ය.

yūpasthambhayē koṭasak—stūpa garbha madhyayehi siṭuvana lada śilā sthambhayayi. stūpa garbhayaṭa yaṭavana koṭasa hataræs hæḍayen da garbhayen ihaḷa koṭasa aṭapaṭṭam hæḍayen da yukta vē. meya mul stūpa ākrutiyaṭa ayatya.

yupasthambhaye kotasak—stupa garbha madhyayehi situvana lada shila sthambhayayi. stupa garbhayata yatavana kotasa hataras hadayen da garbhayen ihala kotasa atapattam hadayen da yukta ve. meya mul stupa akrutiyata ayatya.

These photos were taken at the Sandagiri Stupa which forms part of an ancient Buddhist Monastic complex in Tissamaharama (Southern Sri Lanka). It is believed that the Sandagiri Stupa was built in the 3rd century BCE by king Mahanaga. The archaeological site includes various other structures such as the Uposatha-Ghara, Bodhi-Ghara, and Jantha-Ghara. The Stupa also finds mention in the Mahamvasa chronicles.
