Umbrella and Shaft—Part of an Ancient stupa. place of them the finial and finial cone we introduced at later period. Umbrella is known in Sanskrit as Chatra/Chhatra (छत्र) or Chattra/Chhattra (छत्त्र).

ඡත්‍රය හා පීත්‍ර දණ්ඩ—ඉපැරණි ස්තූපයක කොටස් ය. පසු කලෙක ඒ වෙනුවට කොත සහ කොත්කැර නිර්මාණය විය.

Transcription:

chhatraya hā pītra daṇḍa—ipæraṇi stūpayaka koṭas ya. pasu kaleka ē venuvaṭa kota saha kotkæra nirmāṇaya viya.

Transcription:

chhatraya ha pitra danda—iparani stupayaka kotas ya. pasu kaleka e venuvata kota saha kotkara nirmanaya viya.

சத்ரயவும் சத்ரஸ்தம்பமும—மிகப் பழமையான துாபி அம்சமாகும். துாபியின் முடி பதிலாக உபயோகித்துள்ளது.

catrayavum catrastampamuma—mikap paḻamaiyāṉa tuāpi amcamākum. tuāpiyiṉ muṭi patilāka upayōkittuḷḷatu.

sathrayavum sathrasthambamuma—migap pazhamaiyana thuapi amsamagum. thuapiyin mudi pathilaga upayogithullathu.

These photos were taken at the Sandagiri Stupa which forms part of an ancient Buddhist Monastic complex in Tissamaharama (Southern Sri Lanka). It is believed that the Sandagiri Stupa was built in the 3rd century BCE by king Mahanaga. The archaeological site includes various other structures such as the Uposatha-Ghara, Bodhi-Ghara, and Jantha-Ghara. The Stupa also finds mention in the Mahamvasa chronicles.
