Ancient Mathota (Mannar) Port and Town — This aerial photo shows a view of the port and town of Mathota, a very important trading port on the northwest coast of Sri Lanka, the southernmost point in Asia. The various artefacts found in the explorations and excavations at this site reflect the history of the trade with the West and the Mediterranean, as well as the Asian regions including India. Port Ma has not only been the center of Indian ocean trade in terms of its location but has also been a unique port that holds prominence among contemporary ports. It is clear that a complex commercial process must have taken place in this area since the remains of a moat in the shape of a horseshoe are still present today.
