Description of the photo

This inscriptions dates to the 8th regnal year of king Sena II (853-857). It records the gift of twenty three kalandas of gold by a person named dalana and some more gifts made by several others. Is is written in medieval sinhala.

These photos are taken at and around the Archaeological Site of Kaludiya Pokuna (lit. “black lake”), which is situated to the east of Dambulla and the Kandalama Lake (in Sri Lanka). The whole site is covered in thick jungle forest and archaeological excavations are still ongoing. Besides the ruins of various structures such as a Stupa, there are also caves with inscriptions (dating to the 10th century) written in Medieval Sinhala which mentions the conduct and rules for monks.
