Jain Art in Odisha [Photo gallery]
Jainism is a splendid living religion with a well defined world view, metaphysics, code of ethics and based on non-violence, truth and righteous conduct. Odisha or Orissa is one such place in the country, where Jainism flourished along with Buddhism and Hinduism from its early days till at least the medieval period as attested by literary and archaeological sources. Jain establishments are found throughout the length and breadth of the state. These establishments are broadly represented by detached sculptures both of stone and bronze, Jain chaumukhas, temples, viharas, chaityas, caves and votive tablet depicting ganadharas and purvadharas.
The associated study documents the Jain vestiges in the state that include archaeological sites, remains, monuments, loose sculptures, inscriptions and other material culture to understand its contributions to the socio-cultural and religious life of the state in particular and that of the country in general and to project the heritage sites as veritable tourists destinations in the state.
