Sal (साल) in Nepali refers to the plant Shorea robusta or “sal tree” from the Dipterocarpaceae family. It is is mentioned as one of the “Protected plants of Nepal”. The photo also depicts a Fruit/Seed (फल, phal/phala, विउ, viu) and a Leaf/Twig (पात, pat/pāt/pāta/pata, हांगा, hanga/hāṃgā/hamga/hāgā/haga).

The word Sal can also be transliterated as Sāl, Sāla or Sala.
