Ivory Carvings—Since the beginning of human civilization, ivory has been used by people for jewelry and sculpture. It is said that even the royals engaged in the ivory industry as a hobby. This art was most popular during the Kandyan period. Since the Medieval era, Sri Lanka has been famous for exporting elephants and ivory to Europe and other Asian and Arab countries. As a trading town, ivory carving became very popular, especially in the vicinity of Galle. Evidence shows that most of the ivory items presently found in museums and antique shops abroad were brought from the Galle area as commodities. Ivory has been used to create high-quality decorative carvings and valuable items. These designs reflect the skills of the ivory carvers. These creations, which date back to the Portuguese and Dutch coastal areas, are engraved with historical and religious significance, decorative and practical items such as Buddha statues, relic caskets, medicine chests, spoons, beauty boxes, combs, hair pins, toothpicks, perfume spray, bookcases, and jewelry boxes are among them.
