Image title: Mahabodhi Temple (replica)
This photograph shows a replica (pratirūpa) of the Mahabodhi Temple of Patan (पाटन, pāṭan/pāṭana). The Shikhara style temple (मन्दिर, mandir/mandira) is dedicated to Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha which was built by priest Abhaya Raj Vajracharya of Patan. The temple is often called “the temple of thousand Buddhas” because a Buddha image is engraved on every brick of the temple.
The National Museum of Nepal (Rashtriya Museum) houses a variety of sculptures, carvings, statues, paintings and other objects grouped according to the major religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism. This photo is an exhibition from the Buddhist Art Gallery.
