自利利他 [zi li li ta]—'Self-profit profit others', i. e. the essential nature and work of a bodhisattva, to benefit himself and benefit others, or himself press forward in the Buddhist life in order to carry others forward. Hīnayāna is considered to be self-advancement, self-salvation by works or discipline; Bodhisattva Buddhism as saving oneself in order to save others, or making progress and helping others to progress, bodhisattvism being essentially altruistic.

自利利他 [zi li li ta]—Self-benefit and benefiting others — [Terminology] The actions of Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas (聲聞緣覺 [sheng wen yuan jue]) are for self-benefit (自利 [zi li]), while the actions of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas (諸佛菩薩 [zhu fu pu sa]) are for self-benefit and benefiting others. The Sutra of the Buddha's Last Instructions (遺教經 [yi jiao jing]) states: "To benefit oneself and others, the Dharma is already sufficient. If I were to remain long, there would be no further benefit."

自利利他—【術語】聲聞緣覺之行為自利,諸佛菩薩之行為自利利他。遺教經曰:「自利利人,法皆是足。若我久住,更無所益。」
