The area surrounding an object. Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chapter 97: "Then the army erected a hundred cloud ladders. Each ladder could hold a dozen or so people, and the zhouwei (, surrounding area) was shielded with wooden boards." Dream of the Red Chamber, Chapter 63: "Then he ordered the short hair around the zhouwei (, surrounding area) to be shaved off, revealing the blue-green scalp."
周圍：環繞在物體四周的部分。《三國演義》第九七回：「於是軍中起百乘雲梯，一乘可立十數人，周圍用木板遮護。」《紅樓夢》第六三回：「又命將周圍的短髮剃了去，露出青碧頭皮來。」

Strict defenses, later extended to mean the forbidden palace. From "Reply to Ren Shaoqing" by Sima Qian in the Wen Xuan: "The emperor, fortunate because of my ancestors, allowed me to present my meager talents, to enter and exit the zhou wei within."
周衛：周密的防衛，後亦引申為禁宮。《文選．司馬遷．報任少卿書》：「主上幸以先之故，使得奏薄伎，出入周衛之中。」
