Botanical name. A genus of Rubiaceae called Gardenia. Evergreen shrub or small tree. Leaves are opposite, oblong-elliptic, stipules membranous, sheathing. White or yellow flowers bloom in summer, corolla salverform, with a strong fragrance. Fruit ovoid-ellipsoid. Besides being ornamental, the fruit can be used for medicinal purposes and as a yellow dye. Also known as "Zhizi" (支子 [zhi zi]), "Huang Zhizi" (黃 [huang]), "Shan Huang Zhizi" (山黃梔 [shan huang zhi]).
