雉救林火 [zhi jiu lin huo]—The Pheasant (雉 [zhi]) Saves the Forest Fire (林火 [lin huo])—[Legend (傳說 [chuan shuo])]

Once, a wildfire burned a forest. In the forest, there was a pheasant, which sprinkled water on the forest, going back and forth without stopping. At that time, the Heavenly Emperor (天帝 [tian di]) came and asked: "What are you doing?" It replied: "I pity all sentient beings (眾生 [zhong sheng]), and therefore wish to save this forest. This forest's shade is cool and refreshing, and all my kind and relatives depend on it. I have strength in my body, how can I be lazy and not save it?" The Heavenly Emperor asked: "How long can you diligently persevere?" It replied: "I will continue until death." The Heavenly Emperor said: "Although your intention is so, who can bear witness to it?" It immediately made a vow (立誓 [li shi]), saying: "If my heart is truly sincere and not false, the fire should immediately be extinguished." At that time, the Pure Abodes Devas (淨居天 [jing ju tian]), knowing the pheasant's great vow (弘誓 [hong shi]), immediately extinguished the fire for it.
