It is shaped like a bell (鐘 [zhong]) but is narrow and long, with a long handle to hold. It was an ancient military marching instrument (行軍樂器 [xing jun le qi]), used to adjust or halt the pace. In ancient times, when troops were called to retreat by sounding metal instruments (鳴金收兵 [ming jin shou bing]), the zhēng was one of these "sounding metal" instruments.

Han Dynasty (漢 [han]) scholar Mao Heng's (毛亨 [mao heng]) commentary states: "Fá (伐 [fa]) means to strike. The zhēng was used to halt, the drum (鼓 [gu]) to advance."
From Han Dynasty (漢 [han]) poet Zhang Heng's (張衡 [zhang heng]) "Eastern Capital Rhapsody" (〈東京賦 [dong jing fu]〉): "Warriors donned armor and brandished weapons, bearing golden zhēng (金 [jin]) and raising yellow yuè (黃鉞 [huang yue])."
鉦:[名]
