真實義 [zhen shi yi]—True Meaning — [Term (術語 [shu yu])] There are four kinds of true meanings of all phenomena (諸法 [zhu fa]):

1. Worldly Conventional True Meaning (世流布 [shi liu bu]): In worldly phenomena (世間之法 [shi jian zhi fa]), all things correspond to their names. Sentient beings (眾生 [zhong sheng]) who see earth say it is earth, and who see fire say it is fire; they never say it is water or wind. Similarly, seeing suffering, they never say it is pleasure, and seeing pleasure, they never say it is suffering. Although forms are established based on provisional names (假名立相 [jia ming li xiang]), the acknowledgments and recognitions are all the same. This is the worldly conventional true meaning.

2. Expedient Conventional True Meaning (方便流布 [fang bian liu bu]): Wise people (有智之人 [you zhi zhi ren]) in the world first deliberate in their minds, then expediently (隨宜方便 [sui yi fang bian]) compose scriptures, books, and treatises (經書論議 [jing shu lun yi]) to guide and enlighten people. This is the expedient conventional true meaning.

3. True Meaning of Purifying Obstacles of Afflictions (淨煩惱障 [jing fan nao zhang]): Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas (聲聞緣覺 [sheng wen yuan jue]) use the unconditioned path (無漏道 [wu lou dao]) to break through all afflictions and karmic ties (煩惱結業 [fan nao jie ye]), thereby attaining unhindered wisdom (無礙智 [wu ai zhi]). This is the true meaning of purifying obstacles of afflictions.

4. True Meaning of Purifying Obstacles to Wisdom (淨智慧障 [jing zhi hui zhang]): Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas attain unhindered wisdom, but they are unable to manifest the principle of the Middle Way (中道之理 [zhong dao zhi li]), hence it is called an obstacle to wisdom (智慧障 [zhi hui zhang]). When Buddhas and Bodhisattvas (佛菩薩 [fu pu sa]) sever this obstacle, the principle of the Middle Way naturally manifests. This is the true meaning of purifying obstacles to wisdom.
