長齋 [zhang zhai]—(Chángzhāi) — [Term] The continuous practice of 齋食 [zhai shi] (zhāishí). 齋食 [zhai shi] refers to the religious practice of not eating after noon. "Seven-day long-term abstinence" means maintaining abstinence for seven days. The Pratyutpanna Samadhi Sutra (般舟三昧經 [ban zhou san mei jing]) states: "One meal and long-term abstinence." The History of the Southern Dynasties (南史 [nan shi]) states: "Liu Qiu devoutly believed in Buddhism, wore coarse cloth, worshipped Buddha, and maintained long-term abstinence."
