張巡 [zhāng xún] [zhang xun]—
Zhang Xun (709-757 AD) was a native of Nanyang (南陽 [nan yang]) during the Tang Dynasty. He was well-versed in various books and knowledgeable in military tactics. At the end of the Kaiyuan (開元 [kai yuan]) era, he served as the magistrate of Zhenyuan (真源 [zhen yuan]). When An Lushan (安祿山 [an lu shan]) rebelled, Xun raised troops to suppress the rebels. He joined forces with Xu Yuan (許遠 [xu yuan]) to defend Suiyang (睢陽 [sui yang]) and was appointed as Imperial Censor (御史中丞 [yu shi zhong cheng]). When food ran out, he killed his concubine to feed the soldiers. Eventually, they resorted to eating sparrows, rats, and boiling armor and crossbows for food. When the city fell, he cursed the rebels and refused to surrender. The rebels cut off his tongue and knocked out his teeth, but Zhang Xun chewed his tongue and swallowed his teeth before dying.
