1. A special garment worn by convicts in ancient times to mark the crime they committed. Records of the Grand Historian, Volume 10, The Basic Annals of Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty: "It is said that during the time of the Yu Dynasty (有虞氏 [you yu shi]), clothing and caps were painted with different patterns (畫衣冠異 [hua yi guan yi]) as a form of humiliation (僇 [lu]), and the people did not commit crimes."
2. An ancient ceremonial robe. It had patterns on it to distinguish rank.

丈夫 [zhàng fū] [zhang fu]—
1. A man who is one zhang tall. In the Zhou Dynasty, eight cun (寸 [cun]) equaled one chi (尺 [chi]), and ten chi equaled one zhang (丈 [zhang]). Adult men were about eight chi tall, so "zhangfu" was a general term for men. Strategies of the Warring States, Zhao IV: "The Queen Dowager said, 'Do men also love and cherish their youngest sons?' He replied, 'More than women do.'" Wen Xuan, Kong Rong, A Letter Recommending Sheng Xiaozhang: "Now Xiaozhang is truly a hero among men. Scholars across the land rely on him to make their voices heard."
2. A brave and ambitious man. Wen Xuan, Cao Zhi, A Poem Presented to Prince Biao of Baima: "A man (zhangfu ) aspires to the four seas; ten thousand miles are as close as neighbors." Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chapter 3: "I am a dignified man (zhangfu ), how could I be your son!"
3. A term of address. A woman's term for a man to whom she is married. Journey to the West, Chapter 12: "My childhood name is Li Cuilian; my husband (zhangfu )'s surname is Liu, and his given name is Quan." The Scholars, Chapter 23: "This is ten taels of silver. Take it back and give it to Madam Niu, the wife of Master Niu, and tell her that her husband (zhangfu ) is now at Ganlu Monastery in Wuhu."

丈夫:1.身高一丈的男子。周朝以八寸為尺,十尺為丈,成年男子高八尺左右,故以丈夫為男子的通稱。《戰國策.趙策四》:「太后曰:『丈夫亦愛憐其少子乎?』對曰:『甚於婦人。』」《文選.孔融.論盛孝章書》:「今孝章實丈夫之雄也。天下談士,依以揚聲。」
