鯽魚 [zéi yú] [zei yu]—
Animal name (動物名 [dong wu ming]). Order Cypriniformes (鯉形目 [li xing mu]), Family Cyprinidae (鯉科 [li ke]). Its body is laterally compressed, similar in shape to a carp (鯉 [li]), and lacks barbels around its mouth. Due to artificial selection (人為淘汰 [ren wei tao tai]) and natural environmental influences (自然環境的支配 [zi ran huan jing de zhi pei]), its body color and shape exhibit numerous variations and forms. For example, the goldfish (金魚 [jin yu]) is a variety of crucian carp (鯽 [zei]) developed through long-term artificial breeding (人工選育 [ren gong xuan yu]). It is distributed in Europe (歐 [ou]) and Asia (亞 [ya]), is omnivorous (雜食性 [za shi xing]), and possesses extremely strong vitality (生活力極強 [sheng huo li ji qiang]).
