擇滅 [ze mie]—Zémie — [Term] Another name for Nirvana (涅槃 [nie pan]). Cessation refers to the unconditioned dharma (無為法 [wu wei fa]) that ceases all phenomena. Nirvana is the cessation obtained through the power of discrimination of true wisdom (真智 [zhen zhi]), hence it is called Zémie. The Abhidharmakośa-śāstra (俱舍論 [ju she lun]), Vol. 1, states: "''Zhe' (擇 [ze]) refers to selection or discrimination, which is the distinction of wisdom, because it individually discriminates the Four Noble Truths (四聖諦 [si sheng di]). The cessation obtained through the power of selection is called Zémie, just as a cart pulled by an ox is called an 'ox-cart (牛車 [niu che])'; this term is formed by omitting intermediate words." The Vijñaptimātratā Commentary (唯識述記 [wei shi shu ji]), Vol. 2 (end), states: "This very Suchness (真如 [zhen ru]) is called Zémie, because it is only through the power of wisdom that it can be realized."
