糟糠 [zao kang]—(zāo kāng) — [Analogy] 糟 [zao] (zāo) refers to the dregs left after brewing wine. 糠 [kang] (kāng) refers to the husks left after processing rice. This is used as an analogy for arrogant (憍慢 [jiao man], jiāo màn) bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu], bǐ qiū) and crude or evil (麤惡 [cu e], cū è) doctrines/practices. The Lotus Sutra (法華經 [fa hua jing], Fǎhuá Jīng), Chapter on Expedient Means (方便品 [fang bian pin], Fāngbiàn Pǐn), states: "the dregs and husks among the assembly." The Mahādharmadundubhī Sūtra (大法鼓經 [da fa gu jing], Dàfǎgǔ Jīng) states: "These bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]) are pure and unified (清淨純一 [qing jing chun yi]), truly powerful (真實強力 [zhen shi qiang li]), and free from all dregs and husks."
