怨家 [yuan jia]—[Terminology] A person who has formed enmity (結怨 [jie yuan]) with me. The Sutra of Immeasurable Life (無量壽經 [wu liang shou jing]), Part II, states: "Enemies and creditors (債主 [zhai zhu]) burn (焚 [fen]), wash away (漂 [piao]), plunder (劫 [jie]), and seize (奪 [duo])." The Sutra of the Buddha's Last Teaching (遺教經 [yi jiao jing]) states: "All (諸 [zhu]) affliction-thieves (煩惱賊 [fan nao zei]) constantly (常 [chang]) lie in wait (伺 [ci]) to kill people (殺人 [sha ren]), much worse than enemies (甚於 [shen yu])."

怨家—【術語】與我結怨之人。無量壽經下曰:「怨家債主焚漂劫奪。」遺教經曰:「諸煩惱賊,常伺殺人,甚於怨家。」

Enemies. From "Records of the Grand Historian, Volume 89, Biography of Zhang Er and Chen Yu": "Guan Gao's (貫高 [guan gao]) enemy knew of his plan and reported it. Consequently, the emperor ordered the arrest of the King of Zhao (趙王 [zhao wang]), Guan Gao (貫高 [guan gao]), and others." From "Baopuzi, Outer Chapters, Refuting Bao": "Bo Liu (伯柳 [bo liu]) reached out to his enemies (讎人 [chou ren]), and Jie Hu (解狐 [jie hu]) recommended his enemies."

1. Enemy. From the "Journey to the West," Chapter 9: "It was Guangrui's (光蕊 [guang rui]) fate to encounter this disaster in his previous life, running into this 'yuanjia'." From "The Scholars," Chapter 14: "I'll manage to scrape together twenty or thirty taels of silver to give him, and he can just treat it as something he found, and be rid of this 'yuanjia'."
2. An intimate term used between lovers. From Huang Tingjian's (黃庭堅 [huang ting jian]) "Day and Night Music – I Remember Your Words at Parting Late at Night": "But alas, my 'yuanjia' is unreliable, promising morning, yet bringing rain at dusk." From Wang Shifu's (王實甫 [wang shi fu]) "Romance of the West Chamber," Act IV, Scene 1: "I've been waiting until my eyes are sore, thinking until my heart grows narrow, it must be that my 'yuanjia' is not at ease."
3. Someone who is loved but also brings trouble and annoyance. From "Dream of the Red Chamber," Chapter 29: "This old 'yuanjia' of mine must have been a karmic debt from a past life, to be cursed to meet these two troublesome little 'yuanjia', not a day goes by that they don't make me worry."
