圓壇 [yuan tan]—Circular Altar—[Terminology] From the Sanskrit word Maṇḍala (曼荼羅 [man tu luo]), it was formerly translated as altar (壇 [tan]). New translations include wheel-complete-and-sufficient (輪圓具足 [lun yuan ju zu]) and perfect and complete (圓滿具足 [yuan man ju zu]). It is called a Circular Altar because it is an altar site where various deities are placed.

The Commentary on the Mahavairocana Sutra (大日經疏 [da ri jing shu]), Volume 1, states: "On the equal and impartial mind-ground of omniscience, one draws and creates the fourfold Dharma-realm circular altar, including all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and even the twenty-eight divisions. Each and every main deity's body, speech, and mind seals are a kind of differentiated vehicle."

Mohe Zhiguan (止觀 [zhi guan]), Volume 2, says: "Create a circular altar with colored paintings."
