圓覺三觀 [yuan jue san guan]—The Threefold Contemplation of Perfect Enlightenment — [Terminology] The Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment (圓覺經 [yuan jue jing]) expounds three types of contemplation methods, referred to as the Threefold Contemplation of Perfect Enlightenment:

1. Samatha Contemplation (奢摩他觀 [she mo ta guan]). Samatha (奢摩他 [she mo ta]), translated as "cessation" or "stillness," involves exclusively stilling the mind's thoughts to enter Nirvana (涅槃 [nie pan]).
2. Samapatti Contemplation (三摩鉢底觀 [san mo bo di guan]). Samapatti (三摩鉢底 [san mo bo di]), translated as "observation" or "insight," involves observing illusory phenomena to realize the pure practice of transformation.
3. Dhyana Contemplation (禪那觀 [chan na guan]). Dhyana (禪那 [chan na]), translated as "meditation" or "contemplation," involves not adhering to stillness or illusion, but contemplating to realize the true reality of the Middle Way (中道 [zhong dao]).

These three contemplations, when practiced individually, in combination, or in various overlapping ways, form twenty-five types, which are called the Twenty-five Pure Samadhi Wheels (二十五清淨定輪 [er shi wu qing jing ding lun]) (the Sutra elaborates on each of these twenty-five types).

The Sutra verse states: "Namely, Samatha (奢摩他 [she mo ta]), Samadhi (三摩提 [san mo ti]), and Dhyana (禪那 [chan na]) — these three methods, practiced suddenly or gradually, comprise twenty-five types. All Tathagatas in the ten directions and practitioners of the three times have without exception attained Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]) through these methods."
