From The History of the Three Kingdoms, Volume 21, Wei Shu, Biography of Wei Ji: "In the past, Emperor Wu of Han believed in seeking the Dao of gods and immortals, thinking he could obtain dew from beyond the clouds to eat with jade shavings, so he erected the Immortal Palm (仙掌 [xian zhang]) to collect the high dew."
2. A metaphor for beautiful literary expressions. From Qing Dynasty's Liang Zhangju's Guitian Suoji, Volume 6, Dieyun Shi: "Recalling old times still brings forth a shower of jade shavings, prolonging life ultimately doesn't rely on the golden elixir (金丹 [jin dan])."
