玉石俱焚 [yù shí jù fén] [yu shi ju fen]—
Jade and stone are burned together. This idiom originates from the "Book of Documents, Yao Zheng" (《書經 [shu jing].𦙍征 [𦙍 zheng]》): "The fire blazes on Kun Gang (崑岡 [kun gang]), jade and stone are all burned" (火炎崑岡 [huo yan kun gang],). It later refers to the destruction of both the worthy and the foolish, the good and the bad, all suffering harm and being annihilated together. Example from "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" (《三國演義 [san guo yan yi]》), Chapter 116: "If you stubbornly refuse to surrender, we will break through the pass, and jade and stone will be burned together!" Example from "Slapping the Table in Amazement, First Collection" (《初刻拍案驚奇 [chu ke pai an jing qi]》), Volume 31: "Since it is so, why not take the opportunity to abandon evil and return to righteousness? The court will surely reward you. Otherwise, if you are defeated one day, jade and stone will be burned together." (既如此 [ji ru ci],何不乘機反邪歸正 [he bu cheng ji fan xie gui zheng]?朝廷必有酬報 [chao ting bi you chou bao]。 . It is also written as "jade and stone burned together" (玉石同焚 [yu shi tong fen]), "jade and stone turned to ashes together" (玉石同燼 [yu shi tong jin]), "jade and stone sink together" (玉石同沉 [yu shi tong chen]), "jade and stone are all turned to ashes" (玉石俱燼 [yu shi ju jin]), "jade and stone are all destroyed" (玉石俱摧 [yu shi ju cui]), "jade and stone are all shattered" (玉石俱碎 [yu shi ju sui]).
