瑜伽師 [yu jia shi]—yogācāra, a teacher, or master of magic, or of this school.
[The following represents an unverified English translation. For all purposes consult the original Chinese text.]
瑜伽師 [yu jia shi]—Yogācārya — [Term (術語 [shu yu])] A general name (總名 [zong ming]) for a contemplative practitioner (觀行者 [guan xing zhe]). Yoga (瑜伽 [yu jia]) means "accordance" or "union" (相應 [xiang ying]). "Accordance" has five meanings (五義 [wu yi]); see the entry for Yoga. Among these, it mostly adopts the meaning of yoga as the second practice: a person who corresponds to meditation (禪定 [chan ding]) is called a Yogācārya. Although this name applies to both exoteric and esoteric teachings (顯密二教 [xian mi er jiao]), it is often used to name contemplative practitioners of esoteric teachings. It is, in essence, a specific name derived from a general one.
Volume 2 of Commentary on Vijñaptimātratā (唯識述記 [wei shi shu ji]) states: "This word yoga refers to the accordance with dharma, meaning accordance with principle. Many explanations take only meditation as the accordance. A yoga master is an iśi-śi (依士釋 [yi shi shi], dependent genitive compound). A master who possesses yoga is called a Yogācārya, which is a bahuvrīhi (有財釋 [you cai shi], possessive compound)."
Volume 7 of Great Commentary on the Perfect Enlightenment Sutra (圓覺大鈔 [yuan jue da chao]) states: "Yoga here means 'accordance.' It has five meanings, hence it is not translated separately. Namely, (1) accordance with the object, (2) accordance with practice, (3) accordance with principle, (4) accordance with the result, and (5) accordance with the capacity. Although there are many explanations, here only meditation is taken as the accordance. 'Master' refers to a contemplative practitioner; it is a title for a master, similar to a 'Dhyāna Master'."
Volume 1 of Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya-ṭīkā on the Karma Chapter (俱舍光記業品 [ju she guang ji ye pin]) states: "Yogācārya is another name (異名 [yi ming]) for a contemplative practitioner."
Sanskrit: Yogācārya.
