玉豪 [yu hao]—Yùháo — [Metaphor] Also written as Yùháo (玉毫 [yu hao]). It refers to the urna (白毫相 [bai hao xiang]) of the Buddha. The character 豪 [hao] (háo) is a phonetic loan character for 毫 [hao] (háo). Huilin's Sounds and Meanings, Volume 11 (慧琳音義十一 [hui lin yin yi shi yi]) states: "Yùháo is a phonetic loan character (假借字 [jia jie zi]); the correct form is 毫 [hao], which is derived from the radical 毛 [mao]. Yùháo (玉毫 [yu hao]) refers to the white hair between the eyebrows of the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]). It is brilliantly white and lustrous, like white jade (白玉 [bai yu]). From this urna mark, the Buddha emits great light, illuminating the worlds in the ten directions (十方界 [shi fang jie]); hence, it is called the auspicious jade-hair appearance (玉毫瑞色 [yu hao rui se])." Zhang Yue (張說 [zhang shuo]) states in his preface to the Records of the Western Regions (西域記 [xi yu ji]): "The jade-hair radiates light, and sweet dew (甘露 [gan lu]) sprinkles upon the great chiliocosm (大千 [da qian]). The golden mirror radiates brilliance, and a fragrant breeze extends to all that has boundaries."
