油菜 [yóu cài] [you cai]—
Plant name. A biennial herb of the genus Brassica in the Brassicaceae family. It grows to a height of 30 to 100 cm. The basal leaves are large, dark green, obovate, and have notched edges. The leaves on the stem are sessile and clasp the stem. It has a corymbose raceme inflorescence and blooms with yellow flowers from March to May. The silique is cylindrical with a long beak. When ripe, it splits open, containing dozens of black seeds. The seeds can be pressed for oil, which is used for food or industrial purposes. The young leaves can be used as vegetables. Native to mainland China. Also known as "蕓薹 [yun tai] (yúntái)".
