1. In ancient times, it referred to the state of the Yin and Yang energies intermingling and harmonizing. Southern Dynasties Chen Dynasty, Xu Ling, "Memorial Urging Emperor Yuan of Liang to Ascend the Throne": "From the era of primordial chaos (混沌之世 [hun dun zhi shi], yīnyūn hùndùn zhī shì), the rulers Li Lian (驪連 [li lian], Lí Lián) and Li Lu (栗陸 [li lu], Lì Lù), the hexagrams originated from the dragon chart (龍圖 [long tu], lóng tú)."
2. The appearance of smoke and clouds spreading. "Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio," Volume 1, "Painted Skin": "If he relaxed even slightly, a misty vapor (, yīnyūn) would emerge from the seams."

1. The primordial Qi (元氣 [yuan qi]) of the universe. From Wen Xuan (文選 [wen xuan]), Guang Jue Jiao Lun (廣絕交論 [guang jue jiao lun]) by Liu Xiaobiao (劉孝標 [liu xiao biao]): "Yin Yun interacts and influences each other, mist surges and clouds rise."
2. The state of interaction between Yin (陰 [yin]) and Yang (陽 [yang]) energies in the universe. From Yi Jing (易經 [yi jing]), Xi Ci Xia (繫辭下 [xi ci xia]): "Heaven and Earth Yin Yun (天地 [tian de]), all things transform and mature."
3. Creation (造化 [zao hua]). From Meng Jiao's (孟郊 [meng jiao]) "Autumn Thoughts" (秋懷 [qiu huai]), poem five of sixteen: "A fragile thread of life, vainly said to be tied to Yin Yun."
