音位 [yīn wèi] [yin wei]—
The smallest unit of sound in a language that can distinguish meaning. For example, in Mandarin Chinese, the words 霸 [ba] [bà], 怕 [pa] [pà], and 罵 [ma] [mà] have the exact same vowel sound. The distinction in meaning is entirely dependent on the three different consonants. Therefore, [b-], [p-], and [m-] are three meaning-distinguishing units in Mandarin Chinese, that is, three different phonemes.

音位:語言中能區別意義的最小語音單位。如國語中霸[bà]、怕[pà]、罵[mà]三個詞的元音完全相同。能區分其語義,完全靠三個不同的輔音來表示。因此〔b-〕、〔p-〕、[m-]在國語當中是三個辨義的單位,即三個不同的音位。

yīn wèi: yǔ yán zhōng néng qū bié yì yì de zuì xiǎo yǔ yīn dān wèi. rú guó yǔ zhōng bà [bà],, pà [pà],, mà [mà] sān gè cí de yuán yīn wán quán xiāng tóng. néng qū fēn qí yǔ yì, wán quán kào sān gè bù tóng de fǔ yīn lái biǎo shì. yīn cǐ 〔b-〕,, 〔p-〕,, [m-] zài guó yǔ dāng zhōng shì sān gè biàn yì de dān wèi, jí sān gè bù tóng de yīn wèi.

yin wei: yu yan zhong neng qu bie yi yi de zui xiao yu yin dan wei. ru guo yu zhong ba [ba],, pa [pa],, ma [ma] san ge ci de yuan yin wan quan xiang tong. neng qu fen qi yu yi, wan quan kao san ge bu tong de fu yin lai biao shi. yin ci [b-],, [p-],, [m-] zai guo yu dang zhong shi san ge bian yi de dan wei, ji san ge bu tong de yin wei.
