一切 [yi qie]—Yīqiè — [Term] A name for things that encompass everything (該羅事物 [gai luo shi wu]).
Xuanying's Pronunciation and Meaning (玄應音義 [xuan ying yin yi]) says: "The Shuowen Jiezi (說文 [shuo wen]) says: 'Yīqiè means pǔ (普 [pu], universal). Pǔ means to be fully encompassing (徧具 [bian ju]), therefore the character qiè should follow the radical 'ten' (十 [shi]). The Shuowen states that 'ten' refers to the completeness of numbers; using 'seven' (七 [qi]) is a common, non-standard form."
The Records of the Grand Historian (史記 [shi ji]) says: "Your servant has observed over a hundred mansions of the feudal lords and kings; all belonged to Emperor Gaozu's (高祖 [gao zu]) meritorious officials, all at once." The Suoyin (索隱 [suo yin]) commentary on the same text says: "This yīqiè is like yīlì (一例 [yi li], uniformly) or tóngshí (同時 [tong shi], at the same time), not like other instances of yīqiè which are interpreted as quánshí (權時 [quan shi], temporarily)."
The Jewel Cave of the Śrīmālādevī Sūtra (勝鬘經寶窟 [sheng man jing bao ku]) (middle and end section) says: "Yīqiè is merely a name for encompassing everything."
Fayuan Zhulin (法苑珠林 [fa yuan zhu lin]) Volume 28 says: "The character yī (一 [yi]) is taken to mean pǔjí (普及 [pu ji], pervasive), and the character qiè (切 [qie]) is taken to mean jìnjì (盡際 [jin ji], reaching the utmost)."
Huìyuǎn's Commentary on the Sūtra of Immeasurable Life (無量壽經慧遠疏 [wu liang shou jing hui yuan shu]) (first part) says: "Mentioning one refers to the rest, therefore it is called yīqiè."
The Mahāprajñāpāramitā Upadeśa (智度論 [zhi du lun]) Volume 30 says: "Yīqiè has two types: one is míngzì yīqiè (名字 [ming zi], nominal everything), and one is shí yīqiè (實 [shi], real everything)."
