洋香瓜 [yáng xiāng guā] [yang xiang gua]—
A general term for sweet melons that have been successfully improved through advanced Western horticultural science and introduced to Taiwan. In horticultural circles, fruits with sweetness or aroma are collectively referred to as "sweet melons" (甜瓜 [tian gua]). They are mostly native to India and are now grown worldwide. The sweet melons introduced to Taiwan are improved varieties, so new varieties are frequently seen. They are usually classified based on their shape into three types: netted muskmelons (網紋 [wang wen]) with netted skin, smooth muskmelons (光面 [guang mian]) with smooth skin, and New Century muskmelons (新世紀 [xin shi ji]) which are football-shaped with slight netting.
