鹽水蜂炮 [yán shuǐ fēng pào] [yan shui feng pao]—
The activity held in Yanshui District, Tainan City during the Lantern Festival. Legend has it that during the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty, Yanshui District suffered from a plague for more than twenty years. After discussions among local merchants and residents, it was decided to invite Guandiye (關帝爺 [guan di ye]) and other deities to patrol the area on the thirteenth day of the first lunar month, the birthday of Guandiye (關帝爺 [guan di ye]), and to set off a large number of firecrackers along the way to eliminate disasters and ward off the plague. Three days later, the plague disappeared. Since then, the Yanshui area has held this Gods' Parade (神明遶境 [shen ming rao jing]) activity with a large number of firecrackers every Lantern Festival (元宵節 [yuan xiao jie]). It has become a very distinctive folk festival activity in Taiwan. The firecrackers that are set off have gradually developed into various types of explosive firecrackers, and when set off, they resemble bees swarming out of their nests, hence the name "Beehive Fireworks" (蜂炮 [feng pao]). Locals believe that the longer the Beehive Fireworks (蜂炮 [feng pao]) sound, the more prosperous and thriving their families will be.
鹽水蜂炮：臺南市鹽水區在元宵節舉行的活動。相傳清嘉慶年間，鹽水區曾因瘟疫肆虐長達二十餘年，經當地商紳居民商議後，決定於元月十三日關帝爺神誕日，迎請關帝爺及眾神出巡，並於沿途施放大量的鞭炮，以求消災解厄、驅除瘟疫。三天後，瘟疫果然就此消失。之後，鹽水地區都會在每年元宵節時，舉行這種大量施放爆竹的神明遶境活動。並已成為臺灣極富特色的民俗節慶活動。而所施放的鞭炮，後來又逐漸發展出各種富有變化的爆竹，施放時如群蜂出巢，故稱為「蜂炮」。當地人相信施放的蜂炮響得愈久的人，他的家庭也會愈發、愈興旺。
