延年轉壽 [yan nian zhuan shou]—Prolonged years and returning anniversaries.
[The following represents an unverified English translation. For all purposes consult the original Chinese text.]
延年轉壽 [yan nian zhuan shou]—Prolonging Life and Extending Lifespan — [Miscellaneous Terminology (雜語 [za yu])] Relying on one's own power of concentration (定力 [ding li]), or the power of the Buddha (佛力 [fu li]), etc., to extend the lifespan (壽命 [shou ming]) influenced by past karma (宿業 [su ye]). According to Jñānaprasthāna Śāstra (發智論 [fa zhi lun]) Volume 12, Abhidharmakośa Śāstra (俱舍論 [ju she lun]) Volume 3, and other texts, it is said that an Arhat (阿羅漢 [a luo han]) who has attained supernatural powers (神通 [shen tong]) and mastery of mind (心得自在 [xin de zi zai]), when giving away monastic requisites (衣鉢 [yi bo]) and other life-sustaining items (命緣 [ming yuan]) to the Sangha (僧眾 [seng zhong]) or others, after the act of giving (布施 [bu shi]) and making a vow (發願 [fa yuan]), immediately enters samadhi (入定 [ru ding]). Upon emerging from samadhi, they think and speak, saying, "May the karma that has the vipāka (異熟果 [yi shu guo]) of wealth now be transformed to produce the vipāka of longevity." This explains how, by relying on one's own power of concentration (定力 [ding li]), the vipāka (異熟果 [yi shu guo]) of wealth is transformed to produce the vipāka of longevity, thereby achieving prolonged life and extended lifespan. Furthermore, the Sūtra on the Merits of Building Stūpas for Prolonging Life (造塔延命功德經 [zao ta yan ming gong de jing]) describes a method for prolonging life (延命 [yan ming]) through the cultivation of merit (修福 [xiu fu]) by building stūpas. Also refer to the previous entry (前條 [qian tiao]). (CBETA Note: Refer to the "Prolonging Life" (延年 [yan nian]) entry.)
