巡寮 [xun liao]—To inspect all the buildings of a monastery.
[The following represents an unverified English translation. For all purposes consult the original Chinese text.]
巡寮 [xun liao]—Inspecting Monks' Quarters — [Ritual] The "Rules of Purity, Revised and Standardized" (校定清規 [xiao ding qing gui]) states: When the attendant (侍者 [shi zhe]) ascends the hall (上堂 [shang tang]), a junior monk (行者 [xing zhe]) is first sent to hang the "inspection of quarters" plaque (牌 [pai]). The abbot (住持 [zhu chi]) begins his inspection of the monks' quarters from the first dormitory (第一寮 [di yi liao]) in the east corridor (東廊 [dong lang]). The occupants of each dormitory (寮眾 [liao zhong]) come out to greet (迎接 [ying jie]) him and then see him off (送出 [song chu]). In dormitories with many people, only the head of the dormitory (寮元 [liao yuan]) greets and sees off the abbot upon entry and exit, while the other monks (大眾 [da zhong]) simply stand outside the door. See "Xiangqi Jian," Vol. 9. The "Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya" (僧祇 [seng qi]) states: The World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) would inspect (按行 [an xing]) the monks' cells (僧房 [seng fang]) once every five days for five reasons: first, fearing that disciples (弟子 [di zi]) might become involved in conditioned things (有為事 [you wei shi]); second, fearing that they might engage in worldly discussions (俗論 [su lun]); third, fearing that they might indulge in sleep (睡眠 [shui mian]); fourth, to care for sick monks (病僧 [bing seng]); and fifth, to enable young bhikkhus (年少比丘 [nian shao bi qiu]) to observe the Buddha's dignified and orderly deportment (威儀庠序 [wei yi xiang xu]) and thus give rise to joy (歡喜 [huan xi]). See "Zuting Shiyuan," Vol. 8.
