虛庵 [xu an]—Xuan — [Personal Name] Chan Master Xuan Huaibi (宋天童懷敝禪師 [song tian tong huai bi chan shi]) of Tiantong in the Song Dynasty. The dharma heir of Huanglong Huinan (黃龍慧南 [huang long hui nan]) was Lingyuan Weiqing (靈源惟清 [ling yuan wei qing]). Weiqing's dharma heir was Changling Shouzuo (長靈守卓 [zhang ling shou zhuo]). Shouzuo's dharma heir was Wushi Jieshen (無示介諶 [wu shi jie chen]) of Yuwang. Jieshen's dharma heir was Xinwen Tanben (心聞曇賁 [xin wen tan bi]) of Wannian. Tanben's dharma heir was Jingjin (經瑾 [jing jin]) of Tiantong. Jingjin's dharma heir was Xuan Huaibi. Huaibi resided at Wannian Temple (天台萬年寺 [tian tai wan nian si]) on Tiantai Mountain and transmitted the dharma to Myoan Eisai (明庵榮西 [ming an rong xi]), the founding abbot (開山 [kai shan]) of Kennin-ji Temple (日本建仁寺 [ri ben jian ren si]) in Japan, as recorded in Essentials of Buddhist Patriarchal Lineages (佛祖宗派綱要 [fu zu zong pai gang yao]). According to this, Xuan would be the seventh-generation descendant (黃龍七世之孫 [huang long qi shi zhi sun]) of Huanglong.
