心酸 [xīn suān] [xin suan]—
Heartbroken. The Scholars Chapter 21: "An uncontrollable wave of sorrow washed over him, and tears streamed down his face." Dream of the Red Chamber Chapter 29: "Seeing them both crying, Xi Ren (襲人 [xi ren]) couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness while watching over Bao Yu (寶玉 [bao yu])."
心酸:心中悲痛。《儒林外史》第二一回:「不由的一陣心酸,流出許多眼淚來。」《紅樓夢》第二九回:「襲人見他兩個哭,由不得守著寶玉也心酸起來。」
xīn suān: xīn zhōng bēi tòng. < rú lín wài shǐ> dì èr yī huí: “bù yóu de yī zhèn xīn suān, liú chū xǔ duō yǎn lèi lái.” < hóng lóu mèng> dì èr jiǔ huí: “xí rén jiàn tā liǎng gè kū, yóu bù dé shǒu zhe bǎo yù yě xīn suān qǐ lái.”

Jin Dynasty, Pan Yue, "Eulogy for Yang Jingzhou": "Multitalented and rich in arts, with strong memory and extensive knowledge, able to see the finest details, and calculate endlessly in the mind." (多才豐藝 [duo cai feng yi] (duō cái fēng yì), 彊記洽聞 [jiang ji qia wen] (qiáng jì qià wén), 目睇毫末 [mu di hao mo] (mù dì háo mò), 無垠 [wu yin] (xīn suàn wú yín))
2. A method of calculating solely with mental effort, without the aid of paper, pen, abacus, calculator, or other tools. (紙筆 [zhi bi] (zhǐ bǐ), 算盤 [suan pan] (suàn pán), 計算機 [ji suan ji] (jì suàn jī), 心思 [xin si] (xīn sī))

Sadness and suffering. For example, "full of xin suan." From the Wen Xuan (文選 [wen xuan]), Ruan Ji's (阮籍 [ruan ji]) "Yong Huai Shi Seventeen Shou Zhi Liu" (詠懷詩十七首之六 [yong huai shi shi qi shou zhi liu]): "Gan kai huai xin suan (感慨懷 [gan kai huai]), yuan du chang ku duo (怨毒常苦多 [yuan du chang ku duo])." Also written as "xin chu (辛楚 [xin chu])."
辛酸:悲傷痛苦。如:「滿懷辛酸」。《文選.阮籍.詠懷詩一七首之六》:「感慨懷辛酸,怨毒常苦多。」也作「辛楚」。
